Decade of Vaccines Collaboration announces new leadership appointments
BARCELONA, SPAIN – December 20, 2011 – The Decade of Vaccines (DoV) Collaboration today announced the appointment of Dr. Seth Berkley to the DoV Collaboration Leadership Council and the appointment of Dr. Ciro de Quadros as Steering Committee Co-Chair. Dr. de Quadros will be replacing Dr. Christopher Elias, who will be taking on a new role as a Leadership Council member.
Dr. Berkley, GAVI CEO, will be transitioning from his previous role on the Steering Committee to join the Leadership Council – the body responsible for providing guidance and strategic input toward the development of a global vaccine action plan, aiming to extend the full benefits of immunization to all people.
“In joining the Leadership Council I will be calling on the experience and expertise of GAVI to assist with the completion of a global vaccine action plan, as well as unite immunization stakeholders behind a common goal” said Dr. Berkley.
In his role as GAVI CEO, Dr. Berkley is responsible for overseeing the organization’s mandate to create a world where life-saving vaccines are available, as soon as possible, to everyone who needs them, regardless of their ability to pay. Prior to joining GAVI, Dr. Berkley founded and served as President and CEO of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). Under his leadership, IAVI implemented a research and development program as well as a global advocacy programme that assured that vaccines receive prominent attention in the media and amongst political audiences.
The DoV Collaboration will also benefit from Dr. Ciro de Quadros becoming Steering Committee co-chair, effective today. Dr. de Quadros will be joining co-chair Professor Pedro Alonso in the leadership of the DoV Collaboration.
“Dr. de Quadros will be an invaluable partner to help realize the vision of the Decade of Vaccines”, said Professor Pedro Alonso, Co-Chair of the DoV Collaboration Steering Committee and Director of the Barcelona Institute of Global Health. “His ground-breaking work and vast experience in immunization will help us create a plan to fully realize the potential of one of the most effective health interventions ever. It will be a privilege to work with him in this new capacity.”
Dr. de Quadros has been closely involved with the DoV Collaboration since its outset, as a member of the Steering Committee – the body of experts with primary responsibility for developing the global vaccine action plan. Dr. de Quadros is replacing co-chair Dr. Christopher Elias, who has been named president of the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Dr. Elias will remain involved in the DoV Collaboration, as part of the Leadership Council.
“I am delighted to extend my work with the DoV Collaboration in this new leadership role,” said Dr. de Quadros. “We have a unique opportunity to avert millions of deaths in the next decade and beyond by accelerating efforts from the discovery to the delivery of vaccines. I look forward to contributing even further to this critical effort.”
In addition to his new role with the DoV Collaboration, Dr. de Quadros will continue to serve as Executive Vice President and Director of Vaccine Advocacy and Education at the Sabin Vaccine Institute in Washington, D.C. He has been instrumental in Sabin’s international immunization advocacy programs, where he has worked on the introduction of new vaccines and on issues related to the sustainability of national immunization programs.
Prior to his tenure at the Sabin Vaccine Institute, Dr. de Quadros was Director of the Division of Vaccines and Immunization of the Pan American Health Organization. He also served as the World Health Organization’s Chief Epidemiologist for the Smallpox Eradication Program in Ethiopia from 1970 to 1976. Dr. de Quadros is a leader in the development of successful surveillance and containment strategies for the eradication of smallpox worldwide, and has directed successful polio and measles eradication efforts in the Americas.

About the Decade of Vaccines Collaboration
The purpose of the Decade of Vaccines is to extend the full benefits of immunization to all people, regardless of where they live. The Decade of Vaccines Collaboration (DoV Collaboration) is enhancing coordination across the global community by developing a global vaccine action plan which outlines how best to save lives using vaccines.
